Kangaroo Island is approximately 145 km long by 60 km wide, and is the third largest island off the coast of Australia, exceeded in area by Tasmania and Melville Island. See here for a comparison of some other well known islands.
With about 500 km of coastline, consisting of wide, sandy beaches, secluded coves, rugged, rocky shores and steep headlands, there is plenty of exploring to do. The island is noted for it's flora and fauna with sea lions, fur seals, penguins, pelicans, gulls, cormorants, parrots, kangaroos, wallabies, possums, emus, koalas, echidnas and goannas all likely to be spotted in the wild or in one of the island's many conservation parks. The native coastal vegetation is not only hardy but surprisingly attractive when in bloom and a bushwalker's delight.
Because of the large size of Kangaroo Island, we recommend allowing plenty of time to enjoy your visit. 3 days might comfortably cover the main attractions, but a week or more will give you the time to really get out there. Relax alone on a remote beach, take a long bush walk into untouched areas and really experience the true beauty and wilderness of the island. After all this is what K.I. is so famous for! |
