About Kangaroo Island

Remarkable Rocks

Kangaroo Island is approximately 145 km long by 60 km wide, and is the third largest island off the coast of Australia, exceeded in area by Tasmania and Melville Island. See here for a comparison of some other well known islands.

With about 500 km of coastline, consisting of wide, sandy beaches, secluded coves, rugged, rocky shores and steep headlands, there is plenty of exploring to do. The island is noted for it's flora and fauna with sea lions, fur seals, penguins, pelicans, gulls, cormorants, parrots, kangaroos, wallabies, possums, emus, koalas, echidnas and goannas all likely to be spotted in the wild or in one of the island's many conservation parks. The native coastal vegetation is not only hardy but surprisingly attractive when in bloom and a bushwalker's delight.

Because of the large size of Kangaroo Island, we recommend allowing plenty of time to enjoy your visit. Have a look at the recommended 8 day itinerary. It is a better idea to use such an itinerary as the basis for a visit, and trim it down if you do not have that much time.

Kingscote is the main town on Kangaroo Island. Airlines serving Kangaroo Island fly into the Kingscote aerodrome.

The Kangaroo Island Sealink car ferries "Sealion 2000" and "Island Navigator" berth at Penneshaw, approximately 45 minutes drive from Kingscote. Sealink operate a shuttle bus between Kingscote and Penneshaw.

For more information on transport to the island, refer to our How to get to Kangaroo Island page.
